Lyrical Sanctuary


Lyrical Sanctuary is UWM’s monthly open mic night, featuring standout spoken word artists, music, art, and YOU! Now in its seventeenth season, Lyrical Sanctuary has brought students and community members together to share their passion for poetry, music, art, and creative self-expression. Prior to each performance, the featured artist leads a creative writing workshop open to anyone willing to put their pen to the page.

Britteney Black Rose Kapri

大奖娱乐官方网站主页Britteney Black Rose Kapri is a poet, teaching artist, and Slytherin from Chicago. She is currently an alumna turned Teaching Artist Fellow at YoungChicago Authors. Britteney is a staff member for Black Nerd Problems andPink Door Women’s Writing Retreat. Her first chapbook titled “Winona and Winthrop” was published in June of 2014 through New School Poetics. Her first full-length collection, “Black QueerHoe”, was published in September 2018 via Haymarket Books. She has also been published in the Breakbeat Poets Volume One & Two, Poetry Magazine, Vinyl, Day One, Seven Scribes, The Offing, Kinfolks Quarterly and her number on many dive bar bathroom walls

James Sokolowski

大奖娱乐官方网站主页A UWM Alumni, scholar, educator, wordsmith, and dynamic performance artist, James D. Sokolowski could be considered a renaissance man in the Milwaukee community. He has been involved in the Milwaukee hip-hop and spoken-word scenes since his early teens when he began writing and performing.

大奖娱乐官方网站主页His personal and professional experience directly informs his writing and performing- his heartfelt, poignant, and thought-provoking poetry often chronicles the experiences of urban youth, education and the systems that perpetuate racism, poverty, disparity, and injustice.

大奖娱乐官方网站主页James has motivated audiences while performing on many stages from small cafes to large conference centers; conducting writing workshops, delivering keynote addresses and educational presentations.


Kentrell Washington

大奖娱乐官方网站主页Kentrell is a Milwaukee native, a future therapist, self-proclaimed James Baldwinfan-boy, a self-proclaimed critic of masculinity, especially Black masculinity, a self-proclaimed manga nerd, a brother, an uncle, a friend and so much more. The pen has been his choice of weapon for around 14 years now and it’s meant so much to him. He’s gone from writing only poems to writing short stories and essays. He is not only a poet, but he is also a writer. He carries many identities and experiences and he feels very grateful to be given the opportunity to share those.
